A New Era In Sickle Cell

“A New Era In Sickle Cell Disease.” That was the theme of this year’s Regional Sickle Cell Conference, hosted by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This theme couldn’t have been truer. It is truly a new era. Doctor’s from across the region came to Memphis and presented their research and other ways there are actively trying their best to make amazing progress in treatment.

One thing that really stands out to me most is the continuous fight to improve the way Sickle Cell patients are treated in the Emergency Departments and during hospital admissions. There has always been an issue surrounding the way people fighting Sickle Cell Disease were treated. Especially when they were in the ED crying of pain and begging the doctors for medications that would help ease the pain. So much was expressed about this topic. I really wish I could talk about everything that was brought up during this enlightening conference, but then you all would be reading forever…
